Navigating the high seas or hanging out in the bay, demands more than just a sturdy vessel and a keen sense of adventure; it requires a well-prepared onboard first aid kit. Enter essential oils: compact, versatile, and indispensable for any cruiser or live aboard.
During my summers at Seabase with the Boy Scouts, seasickness was a frequent challenge. Most of the time, dōTERRA’s Peppermint Beadlets provided relief, but on particularly rough days, they weren’t sufficient for some. That’s when I would pull out the big guns: ginger essential oil, known for its anti-nausea properties, proved effective and preventative. I would add 1 drop to a shot of water and have them shoot it, which would settled queasy stomachs within minutes. One entire troop got a shot every morning after the first day.
After sun-drenched days on the water, I always kept a spray bottle filled with peppermint and lavender essential oils to soothe sunburns. The cooling sensation of peppermint combined with lavender’s healing properties provided much-needed relief. Between the peppermint and ginger for my ‘chummers’, and the after-sun spray, I was the hero of many days.
Here’s a list of must-have oils every onboard first aid kit should have:
1. Peppermint Oil: The Cool Commander
Peppermint oil is a sailor’s ally against seasickness. Its invigorating aroma can alleviate nausea and settle the stomach during turbulent voyages. A few drops inhaled, added to water or applied behind the ears can work wonders. Additionally, its cooling properties offer relief from sun-induced discomfort. It can also serve as a bug repellant.
2. Ginger Oil: The Nausea Neutralizer
Ginger oil is renowned for combating motion-induced queasiness. Adding a drop to an ounce of water can effectively reduce nausea, ensuring your crew remains hearty and hale.
3. Lavender Oil: The Soothing Sailor
Lavender oil addresses a myriad of onboard ailments. From soothing jellyfish stings and bug bites to promoting relaxation after a long day at sea, its calming properties are indispensable. Moreover, it’s a key ingredient in after-sun care, aiding in skin recovery.
4. Lemon Oil: The Zesty Cleaner
A clean ship is a happy ship, and lemon oil is your go-to for natural cleaning solutions. Its antimicrobial properties make it effective for sanitizing surfaces, and it leaves a fresh, uplifting scent. Mix it with water for a handy spray to keep your galley and quarters sparkling. Bonus: it’s great for cutting through grease in the engine room & bilge too! Beyond cleaning, lemon oil acts as a natural disinfectant, helping to purify the air and surfaces, and can be used to polish wood surfaces, restoring their natural shine. It also is amazing in water (glass or stainless steel only), tastes great and cleanses the digestive system.
5. Frankincense Oil: The Wellness Warrior
Frankincense supports overall wellness, aiding in reducing inflammation and promoting skin health. A few drops in a carrier oil can be used for a soothing massage, easing the strains of nautical life. I take a drop under my tongue every morning! Yes… it is an acquired taste, or there are capsules available.
6. Tea Tree Oil: The Antiseptic Admiral
Tea tree oil is essential for treating minor cuts and preventing infections. Its antiseptic properties make it a staple in any maritime first aid kit. Additionally, it’s effective in addressing mold and mildew in damp areas of the boat.
7. Oregano Oil: The Culinary and Health Hero
Oregano oil bolsters the immune system and serves as a flavorful addition to onboard culinary creations. Its potent properties make it valuable during cold and flu seasons.
8. Copaiba Oil: The Pain Reliever
Copaiba oil supports the nervous system and alleviates pain. Applying it (diluted) to sore muscles can provide relief after the physical demands of sailing. I also take a drop under the tongue of this to support my nervous system. It works with the body just like CBD oil.
Space-Saving Marvels
Each essential oil bottle is compact, occupying minimal space—ideal for the spatial constraints of a boat. Their multifunctionality allows them to replace bulkier items, streamlining your first aid kit without compromising preparedness, and being 100% natural and pure, they heal the body, rather than just treat the symptoms.
Incorporating these essential oils into your maritime routine not only conserves space but also enhances your ability to handle various challenges at sea. Always ensure proper dilution and consult with a healthcare professional if you have underlying health conditions. With these natural remedies on board, you’re well-equipped for the adventures that await beyond the horizon.
Also, know where your oils come from, and that they are 100% pure. dōTERRA’s commitment to purity and transparency are why I will only use and recommend their products. If you are curious about using essential oils for health benefits, email me at Kim@KimHessYoga.com and let’s chat!
