No mat? No problem. Just a few mindful moves can shift everything.

Sometimes we make things harder than they need to be — and yoga is no exception. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say, “I’m not flexible enough for yoga,” or “I don’t know what I’m doing.” The truth is, yoga isn’t about touching your toes or mastering fancy poses. It’s about connection — to your body, your breath, and your own energy.

Even the simplest movements can make a massive difference. Just a few mindful stretches can release tension, wake up your nervous system, and shift your whole mood. You don’t need a yoga mat or a studio. You just need a few minutes — and a willingness to open up.

That’s why I created what I call my Wake Up, Open Up sequence. It’s short, simple, and perfect for anyone — whether you’re seated on your yoga mat, in your living room, or even in the cockpit of your boat.

The Wake Up, Open Up Sequence

Find your seat.
Get comfortable. You can sit cross-legged on your mat or upright in a chair. If you’re in the cockpit, plant your feet firmly on the deck and sit tall.
Breathe.
Lengthen through your spine and bring your awareness to your breath. If it feels good, close your eyes. Otherwise, gaze softly at the floor. Keep coming back to your breath — it’s your anchor.
Neck release.
Drop your chin to your chest and breathe into the back of your neck. With each exhale, imagine releasing a little more tension. Then slowly lift your chin toward the sky as you inhale, opening the front of your throat and heart. Return to center.
Side stretches.
Drop your left ear toward your left shoulder. Gently micro-move the chin until you find that “sweet spot” — then breathe. Switch sides.
Gentle twist.
Turn your chin toward your left shoulder, take a few breaths, then switch sides. Return to center.
Forward fold.
From your seat, slowly walk your hands forward and fold as far as you can comfortably. Breathe deeply. If you’re in the cockpit, you can simply fold forward over your legs and let your arms hang like “monkey arms.” After a few breaths, slowly rise back up.
If you’re on the floor, switch the cross of your legs and fold forward again.
Heart opener.
Place your hands behind you, press into the floor or seat, and draw your shoulder blades together as you lift your heart and chin. Feel the front of your body expand. Breathe deeply for a few rounds, then release.
Side body stretch.
Place your left hand beside your hip, and reach your right arm up and over, lengthening through the side of your body. Play here — micro-move the shoulder, elbow, or chin to find where your body says “yes.” Breathe a few rounds, then switch sides.
Twist it out.
Place your right hand on your left knee, inhale tall, and exhale to twist, looking back over your shoulder. With each exhale, let yourself unwind a little deeper. Switch sides, then return to center.
Shake it out.
Give your body a good shake. Notice how alive, open, and refreshed you feel — just from this short, mindful sequence.

Why It Works

This simple flow moves the spine in all directions — flexion, extension, side bending, and rotation — which helps keep it healthy and supple. It stimulates the nervous system, improves circulation, and helps you release tension stored in the neck, shoulders, and back.

It’s perfect for early mornings, night watches, long passages, or anytime you need to re-center and reconnect. It’s proof that yoga doesn’t have to be complicated to be powerful.

So, if you’ve been dreaming about a healthier, more balanced life at sea — or you’re already living aboard and want to feel stronger, more grounded, and pain-free on (and off) the water — this is for you.

I’m thrilled to announce the pre-sell of my newly updated Yoga Onboard book! Originally released in 2007, it’s now been completely refreshed with tons of new information on staying healthy while cruising or living aboard — body, mind, and spirit.

And when you purchase during the pre-sell, you’ll also have the exclusive opportunity to add my Yoga Foundations 6-Week Online Course for $150 off.

It’s the perfect complement — whether you’re just starting yoga or ready to deepen your practice before you set sail.
