Every sailor has a list of things they wish they’d done sooner. For some it’s installing a windlass before their shoulders gave out. For others it’s finally buying decent ground tackle. And for a whole lot of cruising sailors, including myself, somewhere near the top of that list is replacing the old fixed prop with a feathering propeller.

It isn’t the kind of upgrade your dock neighbors immediately notice. Nobody walks down the dock admiring your propeller. But leave the marina, shut down the diesel, trim the sails, and suddenly you understand why experienced cruisers keep talking about them.

A Family Business

The story behind Max-Prop is refreshingly simple.

Italian engineer Maximillian Bianchi designed the original propeller for a racing sailor looking for less drag under sail without sacrificing power under engine. It solved a real problem, and sailors noticed.

As demand grew, Bianchi bought his own foundry to control the quality of every casting. Later came CNC machining, precision assembly, and careful inspection. Today the company remains family-run, with the same attention to detail that built its reputation decades ago.

That’s becoming rare these days.
